Ages ranged from 12-and-under through to 60-plus. One of those players was Patrick Robinson, one of Australia's top disc golfers. He's won two Australian Disc Golf Championships and took out the New Zealand Disc Golf Championships in February. After trying out disc golf with some friends a few years ago, he enjoyed it enough to take it up as a sport. Since then, he's travelled to the USA, New Zealand and all across Australia, earning enough from sponsorships and tournaments to fund his new passion. What's the appeal? There's the skill factor for starters. "It's unique in how much you can manipulate each shot," he says. "I played traditional golf previously and, at the skill level I was, wanted to simply hit straight. “In disc golf it's a completely different dimension. You can fly the disc right but know it will come back to the left. You can throw rollers, high shots, and go around and through trees. Unreal! It intrigued me from the start." The Australian disc golf scene has a family vibe, Robinson says, and it's the people involved in the sport that keep him coming back. "I catch up with people and feel like I've known them for decades, yet I only see them at disc golf tournaments. I also started winning a few tournaments, which is nice, so that helped sparked my interest even further." Look out for discs flying around at your local golf club very soon. Disc golf seems set to stay. Just like golf, there’s a variety of 'shots' in disc golf including the drive, the fairway shot, the pitch, the chip and the putt. Photos by Sevi Skaleris.
