Golf Vic Vol 60 No 3 2019

Seventy people descended upon Inverleigh Golf Club in April to contest the Victorian Disc Golf Open. ANDREW MARMONT learns about disc golf – and why it is quickly adding a new dimension to the traditional golfing landscape. The sound of clanging metal and whirring frisbees is unmistakable on the eve of the Victorian Disc Golf Open. It's an event that is in its 12th year but it is probably one that not many traditional golfers have heard about. That is quickly changing. Disc golf, and tournaments like the Victorian Open, are bringing in a new generation of sport lovers – many of whom have played golf before. "In traditional golf, all the excitement happens on the ground. But in disc golf, it's all through the air," says Andrew Ferguson, a longtime disc golf fan who is also a senior figure at Inverleigh Disc Golf Club. "Watching the discs fly, hitting that perfect line and throwing is all a really exciting part of the sport."
