Situation at further 10 weeks – implants ready for prosthetic work Patient history Patient came to the office to restore teeth in the third quadrant. The patient was 58 years old, healthy, non-smoker female with a thin gum phenotype and loss of bone and keratinised soft tissue in the region of LL4 – LL6 (Fig. 1 & 2) Treatment and procedure A full thickness flap was raised and implants placed in the LL4 and LL6 region (Fig. 3). It was possible to place the implants in an acceptable prosthetic position and depth, however there was insufficient bone on the buccal aspect, particularly on the crestal part of the implants. The surgical site was augmented with 1cc of EthOss® bone grafting material (Fig 4) and the flap fully closed with double layered suturing (Fig 5). After 10 weeks soft and hard tissues were visibly improved (Fig 6 & 7) and healing caps were fitted (Fig 8). At this stage vestibulum deepening was also completed to increase the amount of fixed gingiva (Fig 9). After a further 10 weeks the implants were ready for prosthetic work (Fig 10). Conclusion In my hands, EthOss is a great material for bone augmentation because after 10 weeks we can get nice new bleeding bone and an improvement to both the quantity and quality of soft tissues. To get good long-term results, bone quality alone isn’t enough if we have less than 2mm attached gingiva around implants. This was a consideration in this case and lead to the decision to perform vestibulum deepening to allow for better cleaning around the prosthesis. n EthOss is proudly imported by W9 Pty Ltd.
