4 www.acasociety.com | info@acasociety.com Congratulations Dr Haylea Blundell O n behalf of the ACAS committee and members, we would like to extend a heart-felt congratulation to Dr Haylea Blundell for recently winning the 2021 WilliamR Proffit Resident Student Scholar Award from the AAO, the 2021 Elsdon StoryAward from the ASO and third prize at the 2020 International Orthodontic Conference! The above awards are a true testament to Haylea’s hard work, critical thinking and commitment in her research project – “Predictability of overbite control with the Invisalign ® appliance”. For those who have attended ACAS2019 and ACAS2020, it is not new information that “what you see on the software plan doesn’t always happen in clinically”. Similarly, for those who attended Dr TonyWeir’s talk at ACAS2021 Virtual, it was a sobering reminded that shortfalls in expression of planned movement is the norm. Haylea’s research, which she com- pleted under the leadership of Dr Tony Weir, is particularly important to finding scientific answers to quantify the shortfall between software setup compared to what we see clinical- ly expressed, particularly in managing the vertical dimension (for further discussion around deep bite cases with aligners, see Dr Tony Weir’s article in this edition of Clear Idea ). As part of Haylea’s research, she found that “the Invisalign ® appliance only expresses 39.2% of the prescribed overbite reduction on ClinCheck ® ”. With this information, and similar high-quality research like this, we as a profession are continuing to learn more about aligners and will be better placed at assessing suitability of cases and how to improve our software setups to overcome such shortfalls. We are proud to announce that Haylea will be presenting a 1-hour lecture on her research at ACAS2021 in August! We look forward to seeing all her further research that she is currently undertaking with Dr Weir and we wish her the best of luck with her new specialist orthodontic practice – Bendigo Orthodontic Specialists – in Bendigo, Victoria.
