Category 4 Australasian Dentist The Respiratory Dental Institute For the next generation of dental sleep medicine providers T he Respiratory Dental Institute was created to assist both medical and dental colleagues, via online education programs, to better understand areas of clinical management of their patients. The Institute provides up to date education in the area of Dental Sleep Medicine. The teaching modules are presented only by experienced clinicians in their specialist area. The first training programs are lectured by founders, A/Prof Michael Stubbs and Dr Linda Schachter. The philosophy of the Respiratory Dental Institute is to have students ready to treat patients with sleep disordered breathing as soon as possible. This means providing tools and learning outcomes that result in qualified dental sleep medicine practitioners. One of the core difficulties that dentists have faced in the past is they will attend training in dental sleep medicine but quickly realise the difficulty is in finding patients to treat. We aim to grow high quality practitioners in our community that are well rounded and have the capacity to not only treat patients well but talk at a high level of competency with other sleep health providers such as sleep physicians. The Respiratory Dental Institute strives for excellence in developing practitioners that deliver a high quality of clinical care. To achieve this we take a problem based approach to learning and engage our students with real life patients. We also mentor students with their own real life patients and help them make sound clinical decisions in real time using some of the latest technology. With dental sleep medicine being one of the most rapidly growing areas in sleep and dentistry alike, the Respiratory Dental Institute is here to help businesses grow by adding this therapeutic area to their services.
