Category 40 AustrAlAsiAn Dentist problem is solved by cutting the wedge so that its ends are out of the way,” recommends Dr Jordi Manauta. After caries excavation, cavity preparation and cleaning of the cavity, rubber dam is placed as are the wedge, a preferably dark sectional matrix band and the custom ring. then, a universal adhesive (e.g. 3M™ scotchbond™ universal Adhesive) is applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions. the proximal wall of the tooth is built up e.g. with a sculptable bulk fill material like 3M™ Filtek™ One Bulk Fill restorative. “i was not fond of bulk fill materials until 3M launched Filtek One restorative. While other bulk fills are too translucent and difficult to polish, the 3M material offers an almost body-like opacity and an amazing surface quality, which is stable over time. Moreover, the consistency is just right for sculpting. since its introduction, i use the material for virtually every posterior restoration,” said Dr Jordi Manauta. When the wall is finished, the cavity is filled with bulk fill material. ideally, 1.5 mm of space is left for the creation of the final anatomy with Filtek One restorative and the Condensa instrument (lM Arte). “First, use the thick side of the instrument to condense the composite. then, move it over the surface to remove excess material, thereby following the inclination of the remaining cusps. repeat the procedure with the other side of the instrument and about 90 percent of the anatomy is done,” Dr Manauta explains. Finally, the fissures are created using the essential lines concept. in the second hands-on session, the participants produced a custom ring and a posterior restoration using the demonstrated techniques. their feedback was positive: “i registered because i hoped to be given a formula that enables Creation of the occlusal anatomy on the model. me to simplify, yet improve, my day-to- day dentistry. What i actually learned exceeded my expectations: the essential lines concept is completely new to me, and combined with the use of bulk fill materials, it saves a lot of time compared to the pizza technique i have used so far. i will definitely implement it in my dental office,” said Dr sameer shah from the newmarket road Dental Clinic in norwich. Maybe it’s time to implement the concept too! u Contact: Joanne Lipman email: jlipman@3M.com Previously published in 3M Health Care Academy Joanne Lipman graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc First Class (Hons) in Management Science in 2001.
