Clear Idea #3

18 www.acasociety.com | info@acasociety.com CEREC Primescan Starting off with the CEREC Primescan, the latest generation CEREC IOS. Put simply, this is an incredibly fast scanner. Easily one of, if not the, fastest scanners on the market today. It is high-tech with a pixel sensor that is said to process more than 1 million 3D points per second. It is also very smooth when scanning, owing to its large sensor and scanning window, plus the large depth of field. Additionally, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence powering the scanner, it provides one of the most fluid and lag-free scanning experiences on the market today. The other major benefit of the CEREC Primescan is the entire workflow. CEREC are masters of the same-day crown and as an extension of this, same-day dentistry. For this purpose, few systems can compete with a CEREC Primescan + Primemill. Simply put the CEREC system is seamless and makes the entire process very efficient and easy to do. The scanner size is a point of contention. Whereas the previous generation CEREC Omnicam was one of the smallest and lightest scanners on the market, the Primescan is very large in comparison. It is now the largest and heaviest scanner on the market. The scanner itself and also the scanner head are much larger than competitors. In saying this, although not the most comfortable to use, we don’t find this takes away from the scanning experience too much thanks to all the other benefits. The main downside of all of this, cost? The CEREC Primescan is the most expensive scanner on the market and is more than double some of the low-cost options available today. On top of that is the CEREC Club, a practically mandatory yearly subscription if you want to stay up to date Intraoral Scanner Review – everything you need to know when making buying choices. Dentistry is changing at a rapid pace. CAD/CAM is becoming more popular than ever before and there is a huge increase in 3D printers, milling machines, CAD materials and of course, intraoral scanners (IOS) on themarket. It is becoming increasingly difficult to make buying decisions on which scanner you should invest in, especially when every sales rep claims their particular product is the best. We run the Institute of Digital Dentistry and provide objective CAD/CAM courses and training in New Zealand and online. We are lucky to personally own and use everymainstream scanner in our dental clinics. We are also not tied or sponsored with any company. This gives us the freedom of discussing the pros and cons of each scanner without any restrictions, based on objective clinical use and experience. Over the past 10 years we have used CEREC, TRIOS, Medit, Itero, Heron, Carestream Dental, Planmeca, Dental Wings and Shining 3D scanners in our clinic, so we have insight on many of these systems already. In this article we will break down the top scanners on the market today and their advantages and disadvantages. This includes the • CEREC Primescan • TRIOS 4 • Medit i500 • Itero Element 5D with all the updates to the system. In saying that, CEREC sell the Primescan at almost half the cost, if you just want a scanner- only option. This is the same exact product but it is stripped of the CAD software. For those who just want a scanner and have no interest in CAD/CAM, this option doesn’t make much sense. However for those who are looking at carrying out same day dentistry, the CEREC system needs to be on your radar. By Dr Ahmad Al-Hassiny Ahmad Al-Hassiny
