Improving the natural volume of the lips Depending upon the lip type – Type 1 being an already well-formed lip, through to a Type 5 being a lip type that has completely lost lip structure – different techniques can be employed to enhance the lips. In my practice, I use three main techniques, but frequently use hybrids of all three to achieve my goals. The techniques I use routinely are: 1. Classic lip enhancement 2. Cannula lip enhancement 3. Tenting – a.k.a. Russian – technique. The best results come froma combined approach or by using several techniques to achieve rejuvenation of the lips and peri-oral region. Not all patients will opt for an enhancement, and similarly, not all patients will undertake tooth correction treatments. The concepts here are to work as a team, combining soft tissue and hard tissue approaches. The scope of this article cannot cover which technique is best used in which circumstance, but each has benefits for each type of lip structure, and which area of the lip requires enhancement. This is the same for the muscles of the face. The use of neuromodulators, or Botulinum Toxin Type A, can assist our patients by removing the depressor muscles that pull the lips in a downward direction. One of my favourite treatments is to provide a ‘jowl lift’. This involves administering Botulinum Toxin to the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO). The DAO is responsible for pulling down the corners of the mouth, when grimacing or making a sad face. The jowl lift is a precise treatment helps to modify the corner of the mouth. Since the DAO cannot pull down, the elevator muscles have the resulting action of lifting the oral commissures. This helps to decrease the marionette lines and also improve the overall appearance of the lips. Lip enhancement Lip enhancement is not always about creating big lips.
