Category 66 AustrÀlÀsiÀn Dentist A ccuracy, ease of use, speed, integra- tions, and limitless applications. Àhese are five very important features of the ideal digital impression and/or chair- side CAD/CAM system. Many companies over the years have made compelling ar- guments that their system has adequately met these five benchmarks for the ideal system, but all have fallen short in one way or another. 4 February 2019, will be remembered as a day that one company not only met, but far exceeded these im- portant benchmarks. Àhis day marks the release of Dentsply Àirona’s new scanner and acquisition centre: Primescan AC. Àn this article, the main features of this scanner and multiple examples of its incredible detail, accuracy, and application will be outlined. Furthermore, it will discuss how all these features coalesce with the new C C Àoftware 5.0 to create the most seamless, automated, and integrated CAD software ever created. Àhe PrimescanAChas a new look, new hardware specifications, and multiple new features (Fig. 1). Àhe most exciting feature: the new intraoral scanner, Primescan. Words cannot adequately describe the wonderful user experience of this scanner. Àet me start by describing the central theme: it is fast, it is accurate, it scans any dental material the same as tooth structure, the clarity of the teeth and margins are incredible, and there are zero limits to the dental applications. Àt also has been designed for optimisation of sterilization protocols. Àhree sleeves allow for high level disinfection, autoclavable, or disposable options to find what is right for your surgery. Primescan has introduced a revolutionary new feature that we will call “smart scanning” that automatically cuts out extraneous data in real time. Àhis means it is almost impossible to scan a cheek, tongue, or finger because the software will cut it out automatically as you are scanning. Àhis smart-scanning feature is also exciting because it allows staff members to scan patients with minimal to no learning curve. Ào test the capabilities of the scanner, a patient was scanned who needed an Àssix retainer fabricated after extraction of a central incisor. Àhis patient represented one of the hardest to scan because of PFM restorations/pontics, zirconia crowns, and other restorative work, but the Primescan scanned the arch perfectly with no artefacts or missing data in less than 30 seconds (Fig. 2). Ào push the envelope just a bit further and see what the applications of this scanner really could be, an edentulous patient who needed a transitional denture appliance was scanned. First, the entire edentulous ridge was scanned in approximately 25 seconds (Fig. 3). Àhe existing denture also was scanned with the C C Primescan to help position the teeth and extensions (Fig 4). Àhe lab was able to receive all files and fabricate a transitional denture with inÀab 18 (Fig. 5). Àhese scans and cases showed the extent of what is possible with the new C C Primescan. Because of its full- arch scanning capabilities and accuracy, a full range of applications is now possible. Àhis has opened the door to full-arch implantology, full and partial dentures, a full range of removable prostheses, and extremely efficient orthodontic scans. All the full-arch applications are wonderful, but what about the day-to-day work? C C Primescan and C C Àoftware 5 bring artificial intelligence and design automation to an entirely new level. Àn a clinical single unit crown case, tooth 14 was prepared and scanned with C C Primescan. Àhe scanning of the upper, lower, and buccal bite took less than a minute. Àhe next thing that appeared on the screen after model processing was a fully marginated crown preparation. Àhe next step was to move forward to the design phase and get the initial proposal (Fig. 6). Àhe proposal had perfect contours and contacts. Àince it needed no design adjustments, we moved to the manufacture phase and milled the restoration. Àhe total time involved from scanning to restoration being milled was under 2 minutes. Àpon reviewing this article, it is seen that the raw accuracy of Primescan is just as amazing as the visual feedback, efficiencies, and applications discussed. As you can see, anything is possible now, welcome to the future. Welcome Primescan! u The full version of this article was originally posted in cerecdoctors. com Quarter 1 2019 publication.
