Category 132 AustrÀlÀsiÀn Dentist Action Young dentists moving out into private practice that are struggling because they lack the skills to develop themselves why not activate a plan to put the experienced dentists into continuing mentoring programs. À am aware that we have certain bodies that exist now, but how are they being utilised, and how often? Àmagine an organisation that sent out someone with 40 years experience to sit next to a young dentist and hold their hand while they develop treatment plans of root canals and how to take out wisdom teeth. Àmagine the program that showed these dentists how to develop personal skills speaking skills that enable them to present treatment plans that meant something and worked at trying to help them implement them. Help with understanding the private insurance schemes and also addressing the inconsistencies put out by organisations say they represent dentists advancing conflicting schemes to run by dentists for dentists weather is really no exceptional benefit being delivered. Consider the courses that are put on to help dentists achieve CPD points. Àhe cost of these courses seems to be exponentially in reverse to what someone is going to gain, and then when you asked dentist what you gained they say not much. What about running courses for dentists and allow them to gain CPD points that don’t cost the earth. What about the program that allows dentists to consider joining other practices in the immediate area with no negative side-effects? Àhe what about having an opportunity to discuss openly and freely the concept of change for change’s sake in an open forum when nobody would give denies a job rather than nitpicking backstabbing that goes on currently? And finally the what if the powers that be particularly AHP ÀA stop doling out the advice on a knee-jerk basis, so that in actual fact people gain confidence rather than lose confidence in the bog governing body that is overseeing everything. What is happening all of the money that is being paid into AHPÀA? What is this money could be used to provide education courses to young dentists rather than leaving them to fend themselves out in the big wide world? And if they make an error of judgement is that of coming down on them like a ton of bricks won’t we given some support and help them to see how to do things better and more efficient. We are in an age of dependency on social media telephones electronic The crisis facing dentistry now and in the future Second of a three part series By Dr Harry Marget Ào n tÀ gadgetry and wizardry where messaging systems and tweets central world when in actual fact calm call heads a strong guiding hand and relevance would be seen as far better outcomes and if not offer an alternative. Àn Àweden, the Ànited Àtates and Canada there are systems in place that actively mentor young dentists for up to five years after graduation, this makes perfect sense to me. À believe that we are in an age of consolidation at a time when instead of more and more single man dental practices both practices in areas geographically located in low population densities think about amalgamating joining together to share in both technology and knowledge of the experienced practitioners who may be located within those walls. Àt does not seem to be any redeeming features to adding more and more weight to corporatisation young dentists who are joining these practices are working for minimal wages given the fact that they lack the experience necessary to develop proper treatment plans and experienced methodologies without the proper meant touring and teaching facilities in place these people end up being frustrated leaving starting off dental practices in getting into all sorts of trouble as they go about their business. u Dr Harry Marget 1800 806 450 www.amalgadent.com.au Presented by: DR TROY SCHMEDDING Assistant Professor Department of Reconstructive Dental Sciences University of Pacific, School of Dentistry, San Francisco, California Brisbane: Friday 18th October Perth: Sunday 20th October Melbourne: Friday 25th October Sydney: Saturday 26th October ADVANCED ADHESION DENTISTRY: New Technologies & Techniques that Solve Clinical Issues FULL DAY 7 ½ CPD POINTS SEMINAR CALL 1800 806 450 TO REGISTER EMAIL: info@amalgadent.com.au 2019 Footer Ad Finals v2.indd 2 10-Jul-19 12:19:12 PM
