It’s no secret that dentistry operates in an increasingly challenging environment. As operational costs have risen steadily over recent years, dental practices are finding it increasingly difficult to deliver growth and provide exceptional care in the face of greater financial burden. At the same time, talent shortages across the country are creating challenges in meeting service demand, and an ageing population is requiring increasingly complex treatments. Additionally, advances in digital solutions including AI are fast changing the environment in which we operate with potential positive impact on the quality and competitiveness of Australian dental services. Even so, there remains a significant opportunity to improve dentistry across both public and private sectors. The road ahead The ADA is developing a sector-wide strategy for the future of Australian dentistry over the next five-to-ten years known as the Future of Dentistry, which will identify and address key trends, opportunities, and challenges facing our profession, specifically around the key themes of workforce, collaboration, profession reform, technology and innovation, changing consumer needs and cost of care. The development of this strategy involved extensive consultation across the profession, including a survey of ADA members which asked them what they thought the priorities should be for the future. The extensive responses have assisted in the development of the Future of Dentistry’s list of key priorities, with the final focus items finessed at a validation workshop in December last year which has in turn led to a roadmap for implementation. Speaking about this professionchanging initiative, ADA President Dr Chris Sanzaro said: “As a practicing dentist and leader of the ADA’s Board, what excites me most about the Future of Dentistry initiative by the ADA is that it will ask dentists about where they see their profession heading in the next 10 years, and then building on that to produce some very useful strategies that every ADA member will be able to employ. “All of us, to one degree or another, are always evaluating ‘where to next?’ but the Future of Dentistry project means it is codified and set out in very useful ways that will help us to not only meet the challenges coming our way but to thrive through them.” ADA CEO Dr Kate More echoed the promise inherent in the Future of Dentistry project, saying: “The ADA has always been focused on enabling dentists to provide ‘safe, highquality professional oral healthcare’; it’s a core objective of the ADA and underpins much of what we do. “The Future of Dentistry enhances this focus even further, giving the profession strategic insights and direction for the short, medium and long term ... while evolution and change will be a constant, the Future of Dentistry project provides us with the clarity to plan, create and ready the profession and the ADA for the challenges and opportunities ahead.” u ADA leading the way in shaping the Future of Dentistry From Andrew Gillman Editor – ADA News Bulletin, Australian Dental Association INSIGHT 2025 ADA President Dr Chris Sanzaro
