CATEGORY 66 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST CLINICAL The OSSEOFRAME is an Australian success story. It was developed by Australian Clinicians and Biomedical Engineers as a 21st century version of the Subperiosteal implant. Recently, the OSSEOFRAME was listed as an approved medical device on the Australian Prosthesis Schedule which attracts private health fund rebates. Edentulous patients who lack sufficient bone for standard dental implants are the perfect candidates for the OSSEOFRAME. The bespoke design and advanced manufacturing involved in the production of each device serve to simplify the surgical procedure. This translates to reduced operating times and reduced morbidity for even the most complex cases that in the past would have required multiple surgical procedures. During the course of its development, the OSSEOFRAME has undergone numerous design changes as well as additional modifications to the surgical technique. An issue which plagued the early prototypes was exposure of the titanium frame at the base of each transmucosal post. A corrective measure used to mitigate the problem of metal exposure at the base of the posts is the adjunctive use of membranes. In particular, the allogeneic grafts such as fascia lata and dermis which are placed at the base of the posts covering the metal frame connections to each post (see figs. 1 & 2). This has resulted in significantly reduced metal exposure at the base of the posts and promoted excellent soft tissue healing around each transmucosal post (figs. 3 & 4). Improving outcomes through clever innovation is why the OSSEOFRAME (fig. 5) is now being used by Dentists and Surgeons from Mexico to Malaysia and Singapore. Australian innovation is being exported to the world thanks to our industry partners who share our vision of a clever country. u Acknowledgements: The allogeneic membranes are supplied by SAMSON Medical Technologies.
