CATEGORY AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST 35 EVENTS I began to notice significant gaps in the learning and teaching materials available,” he says. “Recognizing these deficiencies prompted me to reflect on the existing educational landscape. It became evident that there was still much room for improvement in terms of the content being taught. This realization motivated me to explore alternative avenues for further learning and research.” Passion for teaching and mentoring The combination of Dr Loh’s academic achievements, practical experience, and insightful conversations with experienced professionals allowed him to identify the missing pieces of the puzzle. By carefully curating and integrating these diverse sources of information, he developed a comprehensive framework that encompassed evidence-based research, practical expertise, and the collective wisdom of seasoned practitioners. Asked for what fuels his passion as a dental educator, Dr Loh believes it stems from an innate desire to teach and help others. “I have always had a strong inclination towards helping and teaching others. Even during my early years as a dental professional, I took on the role of a clinical demonstrator. This allowed me to guide and mentor students, aiding them in the development of their skills,” he says. “Witnessing their progress and receiving appreciation for the techniques I shared is truly rewarding. It is particularly fulfilling when individuals return years later, acknowledging the lasting impact of the knowledge I imparted.” Listening to the feedback of course attendees at Dr Loh’s recently held Module 1 courses in Melbourne’s east he certainly fits the bill as an inspiring educator who walks the talk. “I’m finding his courses really helpful because before I was very confused whenever I heard people talk about implants with all the different terminology. I never fully understood which component they were referring to, but this course breaks it down. It eliminates the need to rely solely on the sales representatives or the lab for guidance,” Dr Norman Sadick attests, as someone who has attended surgical implant courses in the past. Introduced to the course by a dentist friend, Dr Sadick would unreservedly recommend the course to others “as a way to express his gratitude”. “Before, when I opened an implant brochure, I didn’t know what 80% of the components were for. I didn’t even know what to order. This course provides clarity for these items, explaining which component is used for which procedure.” Also a first-time attendee, Dr Alice Yang finds Dr Loh’s courses “very informative”. “I particularly like the hands-on component where we get to learn practical skills, not just theory. I have attended similar restorative courses but I found that most of them are more theory-based, whereas this one provides ample opportunities for physical exercises,” Dr Yang says. “I think the standout feature of this course is that it allows general dentists to learn from highly experienced peers. It provides insights into how they handle problems and solve issues.” Recognizing the expertise of restorative dentists In addition to helping his peers and colleagues solve practical treatment issues, Dr Loh is also on a quest to dispel the myths surrounding the role and work of a restorative implant dentist. “Great restorative implants dentists possess a comprehensive skill set that extends beyond mere crown placement,” he emphasizes. “They are knowledgeable in various essential aspects such as occlusion, encompassing not only static occlusion but also functional occlusion, which involves the movement of teeth from side to side. Additionally, they are proficient in managing critical elements like the soft tissues surrounding the implant site. This includes addressing complications and interpreting implant crown X-rays. Effective communication with both the laboratory and the surgeon is vital, as is the ability to handle complications that may arise from their own cases or inherited cases from other practitioners.” “Unfortunately, there exists a prevalent misunderstanding or misconception about the role of restorative implant dentists. The multifaceted responsibilities they shoulder are often overlooked, leading to a lack of recognition for their expertise.” u Dual-Cured Resin Luting Cement Footer Ads #106.indd 3 10/10/2024 12:37:44 PM
