Treatment in dentistry is limited in the field of sedation and the need is high. Treatment options are limited to local anesthesia or general anesthesia, which is costly. Dr Angelo Preketes and Dr Michael Walker were humbled by the request and gesture from Dr Elizabeth Webb, who travels throughout the Pacific regions and is a fellow of the International College of Dentists FICD, to provide assistance to fill the gap in the Pacific Islands regions treatment options. As recognition of their internationally respected nitrous oxide sedation training course, Dr Preketes and Dr Walker were asked to provide education in nitrous oxide sedation to fill the gap in treatment options for Pacific nations. Training and support in nitrous oxide sedation was provided to two dentists and two oral surgeons from the Pacific Islands who attended the Sydney course on the 3rd of February 2024. Our islander visitors were pleased that the nitrous oxide training was given in the same new A-dec dental chairs that had been purchased by the government to their new refurbished dental facility. The Sydney course in nitrous oxide training has the advantage of being used with A-dec dental chairs in a dental facility which provides outstanding education in nitrous oxide use, in a real dental setting. It was a pleasure to pass on this invaluable knowledge on N2O sedation, to equip and assist the following dentists, to provide much needed anxiety and pain management to their communities. The attending dentists were: Port Villa Central Hospital Vanuatu u Dr Jenny Tangis – Dentist u Dr Nelson Tangwha – Oral surgeon Rarotonga, Cook Islands u Dr Kiriano Nio – oral surgeon u Dr Danny Areai -dentist The four pacific island dentists were eager to learn the skills needed to administer nitrous oxide sedation. All four practitioners also practiced as patients in the receiving of nitrous oxide sedation, so they could personally relate to the dosage and effects of nitrous oxide for their patients. Before the course Dr Jenny had sent an email saying: “Drs Walker and Preketes, we look forward to participating in this course and gaining as much information required to better enhance anxiety management for our patients.” All participating dentists left with the skills and confidence to administer nitrous oxide sedation, they all were excited to return home and start using this new technique which provides safe sedation and the promise of analgesia, for painless local anaesthesia administration; a big obstacle with children. After the course Dr Kiriano emailed back this comment: “I personally appreciate Dr Preketes and Dr Michael for the delivery of this significant nitrous oxide course from start to finish. Now we can move our services forward in the care of those who need nitrous oxide.” All participants realised that “nitrous oxide sedation helps in the abolishment of fear in dentistry”. It was a significant cost for the government of these island nations to fly and accommodate these wonderful dentists to attend this course, but from their testaments it was money well spent to benefit the treatment options back home. u Interested in learning nitrous oxide techniques in your practice?
