CATEGORY AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST91 CLINICAL What about abrasion and sensitivity of the tooth necks? These are often concerns when it comes to sonic toothbrushes. e Hydrosonic pro toothbrush naturally cleans with a much higher number of movements than the classic manual brush. One might assume that this leads to wornout enamel and sensitivity of the teeth, but the opposite is true. Various studies have shown that due to the low contact pressure and the fact that most of the bristles do not touch the tooth at all, but instead clean hydrodynamically, there is only a little portion of the enamel removed from the tooth. For this reason, there is no tooth-neck sensitivity. On the contrary, it has been proven, that sonic toothbrushes reduce tooth sensitivity. u Sources: Schmidt JC, Astasov-Frauenho er M, Waltimo T, Weiger R, Walter C. Sonic toothbrushes in brief Answer your patients’s questions using key points from the knowledge of expert Prof. Dr Ulrich P. Saxer. FOR WHO? Sonic toothbrushes can be used by everyone – children (4 years and older), adults, patients with orthodontic appliances, implants, impaired motor abilities or various other disabilities that make it harder to properly use a manual toothbrush. WHEN? Sonic toothbrushes are suitable for daily use. Thanks to gentle bristles and the hydrodynamic effect, they are able to clean properly even with the smallest amount of toothpaste. WITH WHAT? The best result is achieved when used with a gentle toothpaste without SLS or any other aggressive ingredients, and combined with daily interdental brushing. A combination of mechanical interdental cleaning and the hydrodynamic effect means the proper cleaning of interdental spaces will be guaranteed. It is also not advisable to clean once a day with the manual toothbrush and once a day with the sonic toothbrush; in such case, the advantages of sonic cleaning (likesensitivity reduction and reaching also the niches and interdental spaces) would be partially lost. HOW? It is important to use the sonic brush correctly. The golden rule is no pressure. Show your patients how to hold the brush against the border of their teeth and gumline, and slowly move the brush from one tooth to another, inside and outside. Remind them not to forget the chewing areas and back teeth. It is easy to reach them thanks to the angled brush head of the Hydrosonic pro. WHY? Sonic toothbrushes have been scientifically proven to be more efficient in fighting dental plaque than any other home-use oral care technology. And in addition to being efficient, they are still very gentle to teeth and gums, causing no harm or injuries. The most valued benefit they bring is to patients with special dental care needs – especially during orthodontic treatments and for patients with implants. HOW OFTEN? In principle, perfect cleaning once a day would be enough. However, with both manual toothbrushes and sonic toothbrushes, perfect cleaning in 2 minutes is not possible; not even with rotating oscillating brushes, although these brushes remove the most plaque. Perfect cleaning of all tooth surfaces, the cheek, tongue, and occlusal/masticatory surfaces include (not counting wisdom teeth) 60 tooth surfaces. In 120 seconds, this would leave only 2 seconds for each tooth surface. Even the best brush would be able to reach only a part of a tooth. For this reason, we strongly recommend either a single perfect cleaning of 4 minutes/ day or cleaning twice a day in duration of two minutes for each cleaning. All tooth surfaces must be brushed at least once a day to prevent plaque growth. WHICH ONE? A proper sonic toothbrush should be designed based on scientific research and cooperation with experts. It must be made with gentle, densely-packed bristles, and provide sufficient frequency that together ensures the effectivity of the hydrodynamic effect. Besides this, it must be safe, convenient, provide long-lasting battery life, and have a nice design, of course.
