CATEGORY 44 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST EVENTS In September 2023, Dr Angelo G Preketes & Dr Michael Walker presented the rst comprehensive 2- day course to educate dentists in oral sedation / Anxiolysis, combined with ALS 1 certi cation. is program is the only two-day program in oral Anxiolysis of its kind. Supported by, Dr Preketes and Dr Walker, Clinical senior lectures (Oral surgery, Medicine and Diagnostics) Education Focused at the University of Sydney and senior examiners in the Conscious Sedation Diploma at the University of Sydney, the only diploma recognized by APHRA. Two full days are needed to educate Dentists in comprehensive oral anxiolysis and its nuances and complexities to provide the appropriate medications. Each participant left the course with an ARC ALS 1 four-year certi cation. ey all found that the advanced life support module brought them up to a level of knowledge and understanding that they previously did not attain at other medical emergencies courses they had done. We feel humbled by what the participants wrote: 1. e course was comprehensive and gave me a structure that I can utilise to make my decision, as opposed to a single recipe to follow. 2. e hands-on practice with what would potentially be real life scenarios in medical emergencies in the dental clinic – having the simulation be relevant to dentistry with a dentist there to contextualize helped signi cantly. 3. e knowledge of both Dr Preketes and Dr Walker, whatever question any of us had was answered and explained to ensure we understood both the answer and the reasoning behind it . Our two-day course by Dr Walker and Dr Preketes is aimed at providing the candidate with the skills and knowledge to deliver oral medications safely and recognize and manage medical emergencies that may occur with the use of oral anxiolytics. is new program hopes to provide education in oral anxiolysis, that dentists have been formally educated in and so expand their scope of practice, which at the current time they do not. Oral sedation/anxiolysis is a technique used commonly by dentists to decrease a patient’s anxiety and induce appropriate level of anxiolysis and calm, to enable dental treatment to proceed. With this technique, a patient’s airway and communication skills remain intake. Two-day program in Oral Anxiolysis and ALS1 Certification e core of our teaching is based on a safe and comprehensive oral dental sedation/anxiolysis training program. To successfully teach sedation protocols, we further develop a dentist understanding of pharmacology and physiology, to administer oral sedatives/anxiolytics e ectively and safely. The Oral Anxiolysis course is taught over two days and is divided into a number of modules. Day 1: 1. Introduction to oral sedation 2. Pharmacology and physiology 3. Patient selection and assessment 4. Pharmacology of oral sedatives and types 5. Reversal agents 6. Minimal oral sedation protocols 7.Patient monitoring visual, verbal, mechanical/electronic (blood pressure, heart rates, SPO2) and what all this information means. For example, what are critical numbers in monitoring for patient care? 8. Patient discharge 9. Recognition and management of medical emergencies, training in preparation for Day 2, ALS1 course. Day 2: ALS1 certi cation by Australian Resuscitation Council is ASL-1 course carries national recognition – it includes the recognition, assessment, and immediate management of the deteriorating patient. Candidates are mailed a manual at least two weeks prior to the course to commence preparation for the face-to-face component. is includes those skills for dealing with a cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies in a clinical setting. Included in the course is: u Recognition, assessment, and management of the critically ill patient using a structured -ABCDE approach (aiming to prevent cardiac arrest) u Airway management skills u Basic life support u De brillation skills (manual and/or AED modes) u Cardiac arrest management using the ARC ALS Algorithm u Work as an e ective team member in a cardiac arrest e course can also deliver targeted training needs in a session speci c to the candidate group or organizational requirements. It is ideal for those in healthcare with limited or infrequent exposure to crisis events needing advanced life support training. is course is speci cally targeted to dentists who wish to give oral anxiolytics/ sedatives and the complications that may arise. Dr Walker and Dr Preketes provide this course as they have are passionate about sedation in the dental setting and wish to ensure all practitioners to be educated and safe to the bene t of their patients. We would also like to take this opportunity to make the profession aware that, as Dr Walker serves on the Conscious sedation Advisory committee for APHRA, sedation and Anxiolysis in dentistry is coming up for review. Hence we encourage practitioners that their education in Oral Anxiolysis is current and up to date. We would like to thank the University of Tasmania Paramedicine / Tasmanian School of Medicine and ARC Australia for their support and commitment in this course. In particular Mrs Suzanne Avis and her team for providing us with a tailored ALS1 course for dentists. We look forward to seeing you at our next 2-day program in 2024.
