CATEGORY 54 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST EV NTS Dental implants are quickly becoming a mainstay in most dental practices. General dentists restoring dental implants tend to believe that their responsibility is limited to taking an impression and screwing the prosthesis in, without understanding the many pitfalls involved. This often results in complications including, but not limited to, fractured or failure of prostheses and implants; poor treatment planning and communication with surgical dentists; and poor aesthetic outcomes. eDentistry Academy has been running Restorative Implantology courses over the past four years. They are one of the very few groups solely dedicated to in-depth coverage of all aspects of implant prosthetics, from single unit restorations all the way to full arch fixed and removable options. The courses are divided into three modules, with the first module focussing on single unit restorations; the second on multi unit restorations; and the third on full arch restorations. This course is not sponsored by implant companies, in order to allow the course to present all clinical aspects of implantology without restriction or bias. The Restorative Implantology course is run by Dr Alex Loh, a passionate and enthusiastic presenter who has more than 20 years experience in the dental field and a long list of qualifications, including: u Bachelors Degree in Dental Science with Honours u Graduate Diploma of Clinical Dentistry in Dental Implantology u Master of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics u Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons u Fellowship of the International College of Continuing Dental Education u Fellowship of the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics u Fellowship of the International Association for Orthodontics u Fellowship of the World Academy of Ultrasonic Piezoelectric Surgery. Alex is a skilled instructor, and has very carefully structured the course to cater for those with no experience whatsoever, but quickly ramps up to delve into the complex cases. Dr Diana Koo assists in running the course as a clinical demonstrator and coordinator. This course is very heavily evidencebased, with numerous literature references. This gives attendees confidence that their procedures have been validated by research. The course is also very heavily practically orientated with 8-10 hands-on exercises in each module performed on models with air turbine handpieces, an amount which is not often offered by most training programmes. Additionally, clinical demonstration models allow attendees to dismantle and reassemble all the types of implant restorations, so as to fully comprehend the componentry. Course attendees will have the opportunity to learnabout all the restorative implant componentry, including all the various cement-retained, screw-retained and direct-to-fixture fixed abutments, as well as locator, ball, telescopic and bar removable abutments. Different types of restorative materials for the implant prostheses are covered and their clinical indications for use. Attendees will also develop a detailed understanding of their role in the planning of implant treatment. They will have the ability to realise the implications of dental implants on all other disciplines in dentistry. They will also learn to take part in the selection of the correct platform size, level and connection type of the implant system they are using. From an execution standpoint, attendees learn how to use provisional restorations to shape soft tissue to create the best aesthetic outcome. A good grasp of angled body abutments and angulated screw channels will be learned to overcome surgical position errors. Attention is also given to understanding functional implant occlusion, since the reaction to occlusal forces is different from natural teeth that have a periodontal ligament. Finally, the course discusses radiographic interpretation to allow identification of components used in any given implant case, in order to tackle complications not only created by the original operator, but also cases inherited from other operators as well. Maintenance and management of periimplant diseases protocols are also taught, giving attendees peace of mind that they are providing treatment options that are published in the literature and accepted by the dental profession. This is a very comprehensive and in depth course on restorative implantology and highly recommended for practitioners who need to provide their patients with the entire gamut of prosthetic dental replacement options. u Register online at http://edentistry.net.au/academy eDentistry Academy – a comprehensive practical programme in Restorative Implantology Alex Loh Dianna Koh
