4 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST NEWS While iTero scanners are well-known for their use in creating digital impressions for Invisalign treatment, they are actually much more than just an Invisalign scanner. In fact, the iTero scanner started with restorative workflows and has evolved over two decades to become a comprehensive restorative platform that streamlines workflows from start to finish. The workflows that the iTero scanner creates, have helped revolutionise the way many dental procedures are performed. Today, the iTero intra oral scanner is being used in practice for a variety of dental applications, such as crown and bridge, implant dentistry, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. It all starts with the iTero scanner With the iTero Element™ 5D series, the clinical team can take advantage of an allin-one diagnostic suite that’s incredibly convenient for both the treating team and the patient. This powerful scanner enables the team to perform a diagnostic scan that includes a 3 in 1 platform. It’s the first integrated dental imaging system that simultaneously detects proximal caries through near infrared images (NIRI)² while recording 3D impressions, real colour photography, and tracks changes in oral health over time. The scanner also offers treatment outcome simulations, patient planning, and communication tools, which are all incredibly useful features for any dental practice looking to improve their workflow and efficiency. In the chair and beyond The advancements in digital dentistry are truly fascinating, and the iTero intraoral scanner is at the forefront of this exciting new frontier. With its ability to instantly create a patient scan, it opens up a whole world of possibilities: u Implant planning which combines CBCT and digital impressions to help ensure the optimal placement of an implant fixture. u Invisalign Smile ArchitectTM which utilises multi-disciplinary dentistry by combining orthodontic tooth movement with less invasive restorative dentistry. u Patient records feature that captures scans at each visit, creating a unique patient record that can be maintained and built upon. u Patient acceptance tools, such as the Invisalign Outcome Simulation Tool Pro (IOSim Pro), provide patients with an in-face visualisation of their before and after treatment. u Clinical CAD/CAM enables same day crowns/appliances for patients’ dentistry. u Artificial intelligence: Tissue removal tools: creating a clean, workable scan every time. Pre-preparation scan: the ability to provide the CAD designer with the previous dentition and accurate occlusal relationship. Occlusal clearance tool: the opportunity to check the appropriate occlusal clearance required for the crown/appliance material of choice. Margin marking tool: allows the user to mark the margin and communicate the key elements when sending the case from the intraoral scanner directly to the lab and/or chairside workflows. “Seamless end to end workflow efficiency” with iTero-exocad connector™ From the moment the scan is finalised and sent, the iTero intraoral scanner directly integrates all the obtained information into either exocad chairside or exocad DB (laboratory software) through the iTeroexocad connector™. u Clinical CAD/CAM. The information obtained during scanning directly integrates into the exocad chairside software, including pre-prep scan, margin marking, occlusal clearance indication, digital prescription form, tooth number, shade, and any additional comments. The software notifies the CAD technician as soon as the information arrives in their inbox. u Dental laboratory. As with the clinical CAD/CAM workflow, the iTero scans and particulars integrate into the exocad DB software. One further innovation by the iTero restorative platform is the ability to integrate the intraoral camera images taken at the time of the scan. This can assist the CAD technician in marking margins off a high-definition image. The ability to have a reference point to doublecheck marginal integrity is pivotal in achieving the optimal margin design. Learn more about the various workflows and applications of iTero, and how they can be used to optimise treatment outcomes and patient experience, and your investment. The iTero restorative platform begins in the dental chair and progresses through the design process, creating the integration required to be a market leader in digital dentistry. It starts with the iTero intraoral scan, followed by the ability to treatment plan while the patient is in the chair. CATEGORY 6 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST N WS The rise of high tech in dentistry and orthodontics has proven one thing for sure: there’s a more efficient way of doing things. Processes that once seemed cumbersome but inevitable can now be streamlined to become more convenient and less time consuming. A recent technological marvel from the DentalMonitoring team is a shining example of this new era: 100% remote STL files*. Fittingly, the name for this new innovation is called Smart STL. With the help of AI-powered scans and world class technology, DentalMonitoring can recreate an updated STL file for practices that monitor their patients with the software**. This means that throughout the entire treatment journey, patients will only need to visit the practice for one initial intraoral scan. He also announced there would be a reduction in the amount of tobacco used in prescriptiononly products provided through GPs. One in four people aged 18 to 24 and one in six aged 14 to 17 have vaped, often in primary schools, with some schools now installing vape detectors in bathrooms. The NSWGovernment also announced it would put vape detectors in 40,000 school toilets. The moves are in part aimed at shutting down the harmful black market trade in the recreational use of the devices. “Apart from the effects on general health, the use of vapes is setting the next generation up for a raft of oral health issues, some of which are shown to be more detrimental to mouth health than years Can STL files be made remotely? Vaping and its effects on oral health is a key topic at the upcoming international World Dental Congress, hosted by the ADA, at the International Convention Centre this coming September. Prof. Purnima Kumar, a Professor of Dentistry and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan and the American Dental Association’s spokesperson on vaping, has done extensive research into vaping harms and will be presenting her research to the Congress. She said: “Vaping for six months has the equivalent effect on a user as a smoker who has been smoking for five years. Compared to smoking, vaping is the greater of the two evils as changes occur quicker and cause more damage to the mouth.” u To find out more about the 4-day event (September 24-27) in which vaping and other hot oral health topics will be covered, go to: https://world-dental-congress.org Dr Stephen Liew

Staying ahead of the curve with cuttingedge technology is vital for providing the best possible care and outcomes to patients. One area that has lagged behind is surgery, despite many innovations. Many practitioners continue to use techniques and tools that have been utilised for decades (if not longer). Many of these tools still work well, however, improvement in surgical protocols and tools available to the clinician are always welcome. One of these innovations that have been a game changer for my practice is the NSK VarioSurg3. This innovative tool utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to offer numerous benefits, ranging from enhanced efficiency and precision to improved patient comfort and satisfaction. The NSK VarioSurg3 offers a myriad of advantages in your dental practice if carrying out periodontal, oral surgery and Implantology. Some of these advantages include: 1. Precision and safe treatment: The NSK VarioSurg3’s oscillating tip creates micro-movements, allowing for selective bone cutting, tooth extraction, and periodontal surgery without damaging adjacent tissues. This precision minimizes trauma, reduces post-operative pain, and promotes faster healing, ensuring a more comfortable experience for patients. Several histological studies indicate less mechanical and thermal trauma to bone in particular. The protective element of minimising riskof trauma to soft tissues andnerve tissue versus the use of a round bur also adds an added element of safety not possible with conventional drill/rotary instruments. In cases were anatomy matters such as near a dental canal or maxillary sinus removal of tooth structure becomes more predictable. The ability to remove root tips near these structures utilising the piezo means a decrease in the risk of nerve trauma or displacing tooth structure into the sinus proper. 2. Versatility: The piezo action of the NSK VarioSurg3 means it can be utilised for a number of dental procedures. In my practice it is used virtually on a daily basis to carry out periodontal procedures (deep sub gingival debridement and lavage that is not possible with air scalers or a cavitron), dental extractions that are atraumatic to preserve soft and hard tissues in preparation of implant surgery. The numerous tips allow for not only tooth cutting but bone cutting capabilities uses for block grafting procedures, ridge split procedures and preprosthetic surgery and sinus window preparation and sniderian membrane elevation. I rarely encounter tearing of the sinus lining these days. 3. Efficient and Time-Saving: The ultrasonic vibrations allow for faster and more precise cutting, minimizing the time spent on procedures. Trying to remove a fractured root can be daunting however Piezos fine periotone tip makes easy work of this scenario. It leaves me time to then place an immediate implant. This significantly improves patient satisfaction. 4. Minimized patient discomfort and anxiety: Traditional dental procedures involving drilling and excessive force can cause anxiety and discomfort among patients. The NSK VarioSurg3’s gentle and controlled vibrations reduce pain and proprioception i.e. pressure during dental extractions and create a more comfortable experience, improving overall patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The NSK VarioSurg3 is a welcomed addition to my armamentarium. It by no means replaces traditional instruments as many of my procedures require a combination of tools and techniques. However, the simplification and time saving features mean I have multiple units in my practice so I can cycle these during my theatre lists. I don’t like to be without my NSK VarioSurg3 for many procedures. If you are looking to upgrade your time efficiency, safety and procedure times, consider a NSK VarioSurg3 in your surgical practice. u The NSK VarioSurg3 – a game changer By Dr Steve Soukoulis Dr Steve Soukoulis
