CATEGORY 38 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST and soft tissue principles, complication management, and clinical integration under direct mentorship, culminating in case-based viva assessments. At the surgical end of that progression, course attendees receive live-patient surgical exposure conducted under general anaesthetic in a private hospital setting. “Dentistry in general and implantology in particular require workflows and protocols as well as manual dexterity, so exposure to live surgery and observation is crucial to experience what is needed to take these skills out into the world,” Dr Restom explains. A checklist will be provided to ensure that nothing is missed and all patients are looked after and supported. “Surgery can cause irreversible damage to patients if the protocols aren’t followed, Dr Restom says. “It is imperative to follow disciplines and systems, and we make sure these are followed before any clinician takes part in a surgery.” Mentorship as the foundation, not the add-on That same discipline is what underwrites AIA’s approach to mentorship, which Dr Restom treats as the backbone of the Diploma rather than a feature bolted onto the curriculum. “AIA is built around the mentorship available for clinicians,” he says. “As a profession, we have advanced our skills by offering mentorship to up-andcoming clinicians to ensure high standards of care are passed down. These mentorships last much longer than just the 12 months of the course – they are relationships formed for the length of your career.” That commitment extends well past graduation, through monthly case reviews, alumni access and direct faculty contact. Graduates also leave with a surgical kit and implant kit. “We are lucky to be supported by the implant companies that want to support clinicians and get them started,” Dr Restom says. What success looks like on the other side Taken together, that structure, mentorship and support are designed to produce a specific outcome. Dr Restom is specific about what completing the Diploma actually delivers. Graduates should be able to “assess, diagnose, treatment plan most implant cases and restore full arch cases,” backed by AIA’s ongoing faculty support. Digital workflows, he notes, have changed what that competence looks like day to day. “Digital workflows are very patient-friendly, as patients don’t have to endure traditional impressions. Treatment is usually quicker with a digitally trained practitioner, allowing the learning clinician to produce more predictable results consistently.» For clinicians who have circled implant training for years without committing, Dr Restom’s message is unambiguous. “Now is the time, as not only will the AIA prepare you for treating implant cases, but you will be recognised with a diploma in Dental Implants.” And beyond the technical milestone, he wants graduates to carry something further into their careers: “high standards in care for patients,” and a commitment to supporting fellow clinicians as part of one team – because, as he puts it, that reflects positively on patient care. u For more information about the Diploma in Dental Implants: visit: https:// australasianimplantacademy.com.au SUSTAINABLE.
