AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST101 BEYOND THE DENTAL CHAIR When I graduated as an Oral Health Therapist, I thought the dental chair would be the centre of my career. More than eight years later, it still is – but it has also become the starting point for opportunities I never expected. Today my work extends across private clinical practice, university clinical education, professional courses and international dental education. Along the way, I have treated more than 200 resin infiltration cases and built Glowbychanel, a professional platform that began as a place to share clinical work and evolved into part of my identity as an educator. None of this was a carefully mapped career plan. It grew from finding a clinical problem I genuinely wanted to understand better – and continuing to follow it. Finding my niche For me, that problem was enamel opacities: white spot lesions, dental fluorosis and the challenge of improving aesthetics without unnecessarily sacrificing healthy enamel. I became fascinated by resin infiltration but quickly realised that mastering a product was not enough. Why did one opacity mask beautifully while another remained visible? Was I looking at fluorosis, post-orthodontic demineralisation, MIH or another developmental defect? Would whitening, microabrasion, infiltration or a combination produce the most conservative result? More than 200 cases later, my biggest lesson is simple: expertise is not knowing how to perform one procedure. It is knowing who to treat, how to adapt, what result is realistic – and when not to treat at all. From treating to teaching As my experience grew, I wanted to share what I was learning. Working as a Clinical Educator at the University of Sydney strengthened that instinct. Teaching forces you to explain the ‘why’ behind decisions that can become almost automatic in practice. That gave me the confidence to develop masterclasses and professional education around enamel opacities, whitening and minimally invasive aesthetic dentistry. What started with patients in the chair became an opportunity to teach other dental professionals. Building a brand and a social platform It was important for me to build an online platform and personal brand to document cases, share patient transformations, created branded collaborations and educate the public on minimally invasive options for enamel opacities. Branded clinical photography and content from my masterclasses helped create a recognisable professional identity around the work I was already doing. For me, social media has never simply been a numbers game. Visibility without substance has limited value; the clinical work has to come first. Glowbychanel became an extension of education – helping patients discover conservative treatment options, allowing clinicians to engage with cases, and creating connections across the profession. Your professional brand should be the consequence of your expertise – not a substitute for it. From a clinical niche to industry and international opportunities As the clinical work and educational platform developed, so did opportunities to collaborate with the dental industry. I have worked with organisations and brands including DMG, FGM, Wishmed, Henry Schein and EMS across minimally invasive dentistry, whitening, prevention and professional education. Those relationships have helped take my education beyond my own practice and beyond Australia. My professional speaking and education journey has included Australia, Vanuatu and Thailand, including presenting in Vanuatu and joining DMG’s Asia-Pacific KOL community in Bangkok alongside clinicians and educators from across the region. For me, that progression has been particularly meaningful: the same clinical interest that began with individual patients has developed into masterclasses, industry collaboration and opportunities to exchange knowledge internationally. Social media gave my work visibility, but clinical experience gave that visibility credibility. What could your OHT become exceptionally good at? I believe this question matters to OHTs, dentists and practice owners alike. The OHT role can extend far beyond a traditional hygiene model. Our foundations in prevention, periodontal care, restorative dentistry, paediatrics and patient education can become the base for deeper interests in clinical care, education, leadership or research. Instead of asking only, ‘What can this OHT do?’, perhaps we should also ask, ‘What could this clinician become exceptionally good at?’ Where can the dental chair take you? My path has involved hundreds of cases, university teaching, developing masterclasses, building a professional platform, industry collaboration and international speaking. But none of those opportunities appeared first. The cases came first. Then the questions. Then the learning. Then the confidence to share it. For OHTs thinking about what comes next, find the area that makes you curious enough to keep learning when nobody is watching. Document your work. Learn from imperfect cases. Read the evidence. Develop your clinical voice, then share something genuinely useful. The dental chair does not have to define the limits of an Oral Health Therapist’s career. It can be where that career begins. u How finding a niche, building Glowbychanel and saying yes to education took my OHT career further than I imagined By Chanel Beydoun, Oral Health Therapist About the author Chanel Beydoun is a Sydney-based Oral Health Therapist and clinical educator with more than eight years of clinical experience.
