26 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST EVENTS What makes Dr Liu particularly suited to teach this material is that soft tissue is not a specialty within his specialty – it is, as he describes it, the lens through which he sees nearly every case. “Whether I’m managing recession on a natural tooth, augmenting tissue before or during implant placement, or troubleshooting peri-implant sites that have been failing to stabilise – it’s not a subset of what I do. It’s how I think about almost everything.” He is also candid about what shaped that thinking. “Some procedures look beautiful at six months but prove less stable over the long term,” he reflects. “Those experiences have reinforced the importance of respecting biology over chasing shortterm cosmetic results. That philosophy runs throughout the fellowship.” Importantly, Dr Liu remains clinically active – a criterion AIA holds consistently across its faculty. The cases he brings into the room are drawn from current practice. “Many of the cases I see looked straightforward on paper: adequate bone, successful osseointegration, seemingly favourable conditions. Yet the soft tissue ultimately becomes the limiting factor. Those are the cases that teach you the most.” What separates it from a weekend course For dentists weighing Fellowship 4 against other postgraduate options – a conference workshop, a shorter local course, an overseas program – Dr Liu frames the distinction around depth rather than content. “There’s a real difference between walking away from a weekend course feeling inspired and walking away from five days of case-based work feeling like you’ve actually stress-tested your decisionmaking,” he says. “We have time to revisit cases, challenge assumptions, and sit with the uncomfortable questions – not just move on to the next technique.” He adds that this is not about learning a single procedure. “A technique can be learned and eventually outdated, but a robust decision-making framework is a career-long asset. If participants leave with a clearer thought process and a more predictable approach, they’ll continue benefiting from that long after the course is over.” That structure is consistent with how AIA approaches postgraduate education across its Fellowship pathway. As with its earlier tiers, Fellowship 4 includes ongoing support beyond the course itself – monthly case reviews, alumni access, and direct faculty contact. What success looks like Dr Liu is measured about what he hopes participants will take away. Success, he says, is not counted in the number of grafts performed after the course. “For me, success is when a clinician approaches a case with greater confidence and clarity than they did before.
