CATEGORY AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST127 REALITY BITES And herein lies the genius of the ancient animist culture that still thrives on Bali, between the groaning pillars of capitalism, concrete, tourism and cataclysm that are encroaching everywhere. In Bali, and all the wisdom cultures, there is a genius for life and community that modern cultures have denied and are witnessing the consequences. In the capitalist materialist view, the invisible dimensions of life are repressed and denied, leading to the present shape of despair, alienation, crime and misery that are plaguing us everywhere. The ‘bad’, the ugly, the uncomfortable and grizzly realities of life in the modern cult of progress are supposedly solved or medicated away, therapeutically healed or politically remedied, leading to – their sideways explosion across the streets, within families, between nations and within our own bodies and minds. That much is clearly described in every newspaper, every day. Here in Bali, the darkness within and around us is collectively given its day. After months of creative planning, skills development and inter-generational teamwork, empowerment and problem solving, the whole island is invited to witness what lies hidden between and within us in the shape of the magnificent Oggo Oggo monsters, embodying all that anger, jealousy, lust, fear, betrayal, evil, overwhelm and the whole pantheon of inner demons, and outer enemies which shape our lives and boil our blood when condemned to the invisible. In this act of collective welcome, and wild public expression of energy organized around celebrating the dark side, the whole island recognizes, purges, expresses and collectively absorbs the wisdom and relief of putting a face on negative forces, and accepting them into the collective reality. But touching the holy places, the dark side of the precious ruling spiritual elite, was this year’s pivot moment in Bali when the most magnificent of all the monsters hit the streets and displayed for everyone the very image of the shadow side of the mighty Bali priesthood. Almost 10 meters tall, crouched animal-like on a severed tree stump, eyes rolled back in fearsome trance, ghoulish, Gollum-like and hooked of nail and posture, the demon priest paraded through the lanes and Highways across the choked tourist district and impoverished back alleys of Ubud, bringing to light a taboo through the arts of creativity and collective festival. He was appalling. He was hideous. He was stunningly brilliant in every detail and lovingly made right down to the withered texture of his skin, to the wonderfully creepy filed-off smile of his ritually cut-down teeth. He was one of the greatest political expressions of public life expressed through Oggo Oggo in a generation, and a brilliant uniting gesture. His role in inspiring genius and hard work among his creators clearly fulfilled, his higher purpose of raising consciousness without disturbing hierarchy or harmony so exquisitely achieved that he was collectively embraced as the champion of the night and voted the best of all the Oggo Oggos everywhere. A fever of welcome and joy met him and his sweating barers everywhere throughout the long and wild night as they thrust and stumbled through the streets, and instead of riot and inquisition, understanding and inclusion was visibly metabolized by all the crowds and commentators as Bali, under the dark moon of the monster, proved again that ritual has a higher power than reason in the end.
