4 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST NEWS Ivoclar introduces IPS e.max Ceram Art, its new product line for the customisation of ceramic restorations. The ready-to-use stain, glaze and structure pastes open up new creative possibilities and integrate seamlessly into a variety of fabrication techniques, from press and CAD/CAM technology to monolithic and layered restorations. As the latest addition to the worldwide successful IPS e.max all-ceramic portfolio, IPS e.max Ceram Art sets a new standard in the finalisation of ceramic restorations. In addition to conventional staining materials, the new line includes innovative glaze materials that feature a unique Magic Glaze effect with optimal viscosity for easy application without beading or running, delivering a brilliant natural shine. The pastes are also ideal for the one-shot technique, in which staining and glazing are combined in a single firing cycle. Another highlight of the range is the inclusion of firing-stable, cadmium-free gingiva shades, designed to enable naturallooking gingival characterisation across diverse phenotypical variations. A limited first edition of 750 exclusive kits of IPS e.max Ceram Art is now available in participating markets, allowing dental technicians to purchase the new product range ahead of its official launch. Stain, glaze and structure materials play a pivotal role in the aesthetic design of ceramic restorations. They enable efficient and aesthetically convincing customisation, with surface textures, shade nuances and gloss levels reproduced precisely to blend in naturally. The resulting restorations go beyond pure functionality, creating a harmonious, individualised overall impression. IPS e.max Ceram Art: natural aesthetics in every detail With IPS e.max Ceram Art, Ivoclar presents a new and innovative product line for the characterisation of ceramic restorations. The ready-to-use stain, glaze and structure pastes have been developed to make individual characterisation more efficient and predictable than ever before, while offering additional creative freedom. At the heart of this innovation is a newly formulated material consistency that offers both excellent stability and optimal flow properties. Customisations and effects can be applied precisely and remain exactly Each smile a piece of art: Ivoclar launches IPS e.max Ceram Art, advancing characterisation to new heights where placed, providing exceptional accuracy of detail – even after firing. With its optimised consistency, IPS e.max Ceram Art is ideally suited for the one-shot technique (wet-on-wet staining). Staining and glazing can be performed in a single firing cycle, saving time and simplifying workflows – a real advantage for modern, efficiency-focused laboratories. A standout feature of the ready-to-use IPS e.max Ceram Art pastes is the self-glaze effect, which eliminates the need for an additional glaze firing. In lifelike reconstructions, the design of the gingival area is becoming increasingly important. Colour, translucency, and structure vary greatly among individuals and significantly influence the overall appearance of the restoration. The new IPS e.max Ceram Art gingiva materials – cadmium-free for the first time – are available in a wide range of shades to reproduce virtually all phenotypical variations. Reconstructed gingival areas blend seamlessly into their surroundings, delivering results that look very natural. The new product line also delivers outstanding results in surface design. The form-stable structure pastes provide targeted 3D effects, such as natural tooth or gingiva textures – without the need for an additional layering step. Together, these advantages make IPS e.max Ceram Art a material that offers creative freedom in design and process reliability in application. The materials are perfectly matched to Ivoclar’s all-ceramic framework materials such as IPS e.max Press, IPS e.max CAD (lithium disilicate) and IPS e.max ZirCAD (zirconium oxide). They can also be used for the characterisation of Ivoclar’s metalceramics, as well as other framework materials with a compatible CTE. From concept to global standard – 20 years of IPS e.max Since its introduction in 2005, IPS e.max has become the world’s leading all-ceramic solution. Today, the portfolio includes lithium disilicate, zirconium oxide, and veneering ceramics, providing maximum flexibility, aesthetics, and durability. And now, with IPS e.max Ceram Art, Ivoclar is once again setting a new standard in ceramic design. Available now: exclusive IPS e.max Ceram Art First Edition kits IPS e.max Ceram Art is now available as a limited First Edition in participating markets, allowing dental technicians to get access to the new product line by purchasing one of the 750 exclusive kits even before the official market launch. CATEGORY 6 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST NEWS In the past, fast sintering of zirconia materials often involved compromises in mechanical or aesthetic properties. With the innovative IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime block, you can now offer your patients both the reliability of high flexural strength and an aesthetically pleasing result A masterpiece for greater efficiency in your practice Efficiency is the key to success in the fabrication of fixed restorations in a single session. The material properties of IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime enable speed sintering of restorations in the combination furnace Programat® CS6 in just 15 minutes1 – without compromising on aesthetics. The shorter sintering times meet the demand for an accelerated practice workflow, saving valuable time for you, your team and your patients. Along with providing an enhanced patient experience, you can boost your productivity by spending less time on the fabrication of individual restorations. Proven high-strength material properties for greater confidence With a biaxial strength of 1,100 MPa2, the new zirconia block allows for the fabrication of robust and durable restorations in the anterior and posterior regions. The material is particularly suitable for crowns in regions exposed to high chewing forces, such as premolars and molars. This property reduces the risk of cracks and fractures significantly, thereby enhancing confidence – for both you and your patients. The high material strength allows for a reduction in wall thicknesses to 0.8mm for crowns, enabling conservative preparation and preserving more natural tooth structure for your patients. A block that combines aesthetics and versatility The natural progression of shade and translucency from the dentine to the incisal edge3 allows IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime zirconia restorations to be effortlessly designed without the need for applying elaborate final characterisation with stains. The progression of shade and translucency can be adapted to the neighbouring teeth by moving the position of the crown within the block during the design phase. Positioning the crown higher up in the block results in more translucency and brightness in the incisal area, while moving the crown towards the dentine area of the block ensures good opacity, allowing even discoloured natural tooth structure to be concealed effectively. The material is available in eleven shades, ranging from classic tooth shades to Bleach shades. A new “0“shade was developed for patients who desire a brighter result than A1. With its reduced pigment content, the 0 shade results in restorations appear less greyish compared to Bleach shades, bridging the gap between Bleach shades and shade A1. The finishing options for IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime restorations are versatile: They can be polished, glazed or characterised, depending on the specific case. High gloss polishing in no time The new OptraGloss® Extra Oral is a universal, two-step polishing set for extraoral application, complemented by an optional polishing paste. The polishers are ideal for finishing oxide and glass-ceramics such as IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, IPS e.max CAD and Empress CAD. From unpolished restoration to a high gloss in just a few minutes regardless of the restoration’s surface structure or characteristics and offer a faster alternative to glaze firing. Coordinated efficient CAD/CAM chairside workflow The IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime block uses innovative material technology that makes the process of creating monolithic zirconia restorations fast and efficient throughout the entire workflow – from fabrication to cementation. In the Programat CS6 combination furnace, the short sintering times accelerate the entire CAD/CAM zirconia workflow significantly (15 minutes1). The choice of the cement is a crucial factor for the smooth completion of a restoration in a single session. Cementing IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime restorations with a self-adhesive (e.g. Speedcem® Plus) or adhesive (e.g. Variolink® Esthetic) provides quick excess removal and easy application of the cement ensuring predictable cementation results, regardless of the patient case. In addition, cementation protocols can also be chosen apart from the conventional method, depending on the clinical situation and the dentist’s preference. The perfectly coordinated products from Ivoclar support you in achieving an even smoother and more efficient treatment workflow for the fabrication of IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime restorations in a single session. CATEGORY 8 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST NEWS With the Osstell Beacon and Osstell Classic, the W&H Group offers two tools for implant stability measurement. Both solutions share the same goal: to support clinicians in optimising healing periods for various clinical situations and implant systems. The devices help determine the stability of dental implants without interfering with the biological healing process. Fast, non-invasive, and precise, they provide clinicians with valuable diagnostic information for confident, evidence-based decisionmaking. “With Osstell, there is no doubt as to whether the implant is osseointegrated or not, contributing to an increase in my success rate in immediate and early loading, as I can quickly be sure whether I can load the implant or not”, says Dr. Alef Menezes. Using advanced resonance frequency analysis (RFA), the Osstell Beacon and Osstell Classic deliver real-time insights by sending a magnetic pulse to the SmartPeg, generating an accurate Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) value. This value enables clinicians to determine the optimal time to load an implant, allowing for an individualised treatment plan that reduces risk and enhances patient outcomes. Connected and intuitive – Osstell Beacon The Osstell Beacon stands out as a smart solution for modern implantology – thanks to its seamless connectivity with OsstellConnect and the W&H Implantmed Plus. Its direct integration with the OsstellConnect platform enables efficient monitoring and documentation of implant treatments. The digital tool considers key factors such as patient-specific risk characteristics, implant brand, and loading protocols. After implant placement, the Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) value can be easily recorded and tracked within the W&H Implant stability measurement solutions system – offering greater control throughout the healing process. “Monitoring our ISQ values has allowed us to customise our loading protocols for each individual patient increasing the predictability of treatment outcomes”, emphasizes Dr. Aly Virani. For an even more efficient workflow, the Osstell Beacon can be paired with W&H’s Implantmed Plus. This combination allows the ISQ value to be displayed directly on the Implantmed Plus screen – simplifying clinical procedures and enabling real-time decision-making during implant placement. Basic option – Osstell Classic For those who prefer a straightforward approach to measuring implant stability, the Osstell Classic offers a reliable and efficient solution. Designed as a basic option, it provides accurate ISQ values directly on its display – without additional features or connectivity. While it does not support integration with OsstellConnect or the W&H Implantmed, the Osstell Classic can still be used as a standalone device, allowing clinicians to carry out reliable implant stability measurements as part of their routine workflow. CATEGORY 14 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST INNOVATIONS For decades, dentistry has mostly leaned on verbal explanations and static X-rays to help patients grasp complex oral health issues. Too often, those conversations end with polite nods but little true understanding. Patients may leave the chair unclear about what can be addressed immediately and what may warrant consideration in the future. This is where Align™ Technology, with the iTero Lumina™ Series scanners, is helping to drive technological innovation. The Align™ Oral Health Suite1 is a software feature that moves the conversation beyond description and into demonstration. A quick iTero Lumina scan provides a vivid, real-time portrait of the mouth from crowding and occlusal wear to gingival health and plaque accumulation. While diagnostic conversations have long relied on tools like X-rays and intraoral photos, the iTero Lumina scanner brings a new level of visibility, allowing treatment discussions to be anchored in real-time, high-definition images of the patient’s own teeth. Most surveyed doctors and their staff prefer the iTero Lumina intraoral scanner for its easy scanning experience.2 The iTero Lumina scanner is more than just a replacement for analogue impression-taking. It enables a diagnostic workflow while the patient is still in the chair. In many ways, it is the diagnostic dream and the foundation of the modern dental practice. Dr Jack Milgate, Dentist, Barwon Heads Dental says, “If a picture paints a thousand words, then the Align Oral Health Suite helps create a clear, consistent narrative for every patient. Traditional records, whether The diagnostic dream transforming digital dentistry from periodontal probes, lighting variations in photography, or x-ray angles, are often open to interpretation. But with the iTero™ intraoral scanner integrated into the AOHS, we get accurate, reproducible records that allow us to reliably measure changes over time.” Importantly, the Align Oral Health Suite can help establish a new baseline for preventive care. Each scan becomes part of a digital record, allowing clinicians to track changes over time through the iTero Timelapse™3 feature, which compares patient scans to highlight any differences or changes over a period of time. Early signs of caries, bruxism, or periodontal concerns may be identified. Recall appointments are transformed into progress reviews, where patients can compare “then and now,” discuss improvements, and explore opportunities for early intervention. Scan to plan: A new standard in patient-centric diagnostics In the past, when impressions were required – the patient journey began with messy materials and at times, incomplete records. Digital impressions are 59% quicker than conventional impressions.4 Today, digital innovations like the iTero Lumina scanner and the Align Oral Health Suite allow clinicians to begin treatment planning from the very first visit. The phrase “scan to plan” encapsulates the power of this approach, not just digitising impressions, but digitising diagnostics: real-time, comprehensive, and deeply visual. Whether for hygiene visits, provisional restorations, or complete smile makeovers, the process starts with a simple scan. This is where dentistry can meet design. From soft tissue detail and occlusion mapping to photorealistic smile simulations, every scan can become a roadmap for clinical precision. Facial recognition: Personalising treatment beyond the tooth What truly sets the Align Oral Health Suite apart is its integration of facial recognition into diagnostics. This technology aids to bridge a potential gap between intraoral precision and extraoral aesthetics – placing the patient’s face, not just their dentition, at the centre of the planning process. Using the Invisalign® Outcome Simulator Pro5 with Multi Treatment Simulation, clinicians can now show patients not just “what” needs fixing, but “how” and “why.” 80% of surveyed doctors expressed satisfaction with the Invisalign Outcome Simulator Pro in-face visualisation.6 Imagine this: a patient sits in your chair, uncertain about restorative treatment and its outcome. With the iTero Lumina scanner, system and software including facial integration and photorealism, you can help patients visualise potential outcomes prior to treatment, supporting informed decision-making. What is interesting is these simulations may be more than visual aids. They can become diagnostic assets. They can assist in occlusal planning, functional analysis, and provide a platform for better aesthetic forecasting. This approach supports co-discovery, helping patients better understand their oral health and actively engage in their care.
CATEGORY AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST15 The new clinical foundation. How digital charting is reshaping scan reports. At the core of the iTero scanner software innovation like the Align Oral Health Suite is a commitment to data-driven, patientspecific care, most evident in its approach to digital charting and scan reporting. Intraoral scanning has moved far beyond impression-taking; it now serves as the foundation for comprehensive diagnostics. A single iTero scan captures a fullcolour 3D model that includes tooth anatomy, soft tissue contours, occlusion, and periodontal health markers. Clinical risks like wear, erosion, abfraction, and mobility are flagged, supporting early detection and proactive care. In fact, 81% of surveyed users agree that the iTero Lumina™ intraoral scanner helps remove barriers to adoption and utilisation.7 These insights are automatically compiled into a dynamic Scan Report8, transforming the traditional dental record into a real-time communication hub. Every tooth, every surface, every occlusal relationship can be recorded, analysed, and shared across the care team. Whether coordinating care with restorative colleagues, monitoring aligner progress, or reviewing hygiene outcomes, the scan report can help ensure that the entire care team, and the patient, stay on the same page. More than just technology The iTero software and hardware innovations are not just a set of tools; they’re a reimagining of what diagnostics can be. From “Scan to Plan” workflows and facially driven simulations to data-rich charting and reporting, the iTero Lumina scanner, software and system deliver a patient-centric, visually intuitive, and clinically rigorous experience. In a world where patients demand clarity and clinicians demand precision, the iTero Lumina scanner with the Align Oral Health Suite and other software innovations delivers both, turning the vision of a diagnostic dream into reality by aligning people, data, and outcomes in a way that is uniquely its own. CATEGORY 16 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST INNOVATIONS Dental payment plans allow patients to spread the cost of treatment into smaller, manageable instalments rather than paying a lump sum. Options vary. Some plans are short-term and interest-free for immediate treatment, such as Fund My Dental or Afterpay. Others are longer-term direct debit plans for larger treatments, such as DentiCare or Humm. Some dentists also offer in-house payment plans for longterm patients. There are many advantages to using the right payment plan in the right way when running or owning a dental practice. With the Super era possibly coming to an end, a simple payment plan that is easy for the clinic and the patient will be important. As the CEO of Fund My Dental I still advise patients to use savings or borrow from friends or family where possible. Most plans come with some form of cost. But there are benefits too. Advantages of payment plans – Practices A tool to increase treatment acceptance Financing options, especially no-interest plans, can lift case acceptance. When patients can convert “too expensive” into a monthly payment, they are more likely to agree to recommended care, including complex or elective treatment. Cash flow and administrative efficiency When a third-party provider is used, the practice often receives payment quickly. This reduces risk and lowers the admin involved in chasing overdue accounts. Billing, payments, and credit checks are handled externally. Integrated finance options inside practice software also make day-to-day work easier. Patient-centric benefits From the patient’s view, payment plans make care more accessible. When cost is less of a barrier, they are more willing to go ahead with recommended treatment instead of delaying it. There is also a rise in buy-now-paylater options in dental clinics, which are attractive for smaller or cosmetic treatments because of simple checks and repayment structures. Advantages of payment plans – Patients X Breaks a large cost into smaller payments X Makes treatment possible sooner X Keeps budgets predictable with set payments X Helps avoid high-interest credit cards X May support choosing the best treatment instead of the cheapest X Reduces financial stress and makes the decision feel easier Risks and downsides of payment plans – Practices X Third-party finance companies may take a merchant fee X In-house plans carry credit risk and admin work X There are ethical concerns when finance companies influence the dentist-patient relationship X Payment plans should never dictate clinical decision-making Risks and downsides of payment plans – Patients X High interest if the promotional period ends or a payment is missed X Possible impact on credit score X Fees such as late fees, setup fees, or annual fees X Missed payments may delay treatment in phased plans X Total cost can be higher once interest or fees are included X Limited flexibility after signing the contract X Risk of overspending on larger treatment plans A well-built payment plan for the right patient can support both the practice and the patient. At Fund My Dental we see patients taking loans for every type of procedure. General dentistry, implants, aligners, injectables, and oral appliances are common. One area often overlooked is using a payment plan to support safer, more effective teeth whitening outcomes. Specific advantages of payment plans for teeth whitening 1. Allows patients to start now Instead of saving for months, patients can begin whitening straight away and pay over time. This is useful when a brighter smile is needed before an event. 2. Reduces financial stress A simple repayment cycle feels easier than paying the full fee upfront. 3. Supports safer treatment choices Patients often choose cheaper store products because of cost. Payment plans make dentist-led whitening more accessible. When whitening is part of a structured care plan, payment options help patients choose the supervised treatment you recommend. Many practices pair payment plans with a dentist-supervised take-home system to support predictable outcomes and a better patient experience. 18 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST PRODUCT REVIEW Digital scanners have revolutionised modern dentistry – improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient comfort. But as any clinician who has worked with these knows, not all scanners are created equal. Having worked with multiple systems over the years – from the CEREC Omnicam and Medit i300/i500 as an associate, to now using the Trios in my own clinic – I wanted to share an honest perspective on what actually makes a scanner great. CEREC Omnicam – Where it all began My first real exposure to digital scanning came with the CEREC Omnicam. At the time, it was considered cutting-edge: a powder-free, full-colour scanner that could integrate with chairside milling. In practice, though, I found the Omnicam required patience. Capturing clean, consistent scans wasn’t always smooth, deeper margins were tricky, and maintaining a steady scanning flow took effort. To the best of my knowledge, the Omnicam is now mainly available via second-hand or refurbished channels in Australia, as Dentsply Sirona has shifted focus to the PrimeScan. Medit i300 / i500 / i700 / i900 – A brand finding its stride Earlier in my career, I worked with the Medit i300 and later the Medit i500 (released in 2018). Both were open-system, budget-friendly scanners. The i300 felt rudimentary, while the i500 was a step up – faster, more detailed, and more stable – though it still struggled with deeper margins and the smaller tips weren’t ideal for patient comfort. I haven’t used the i700 or i900 personally, but clinicians around me – including a specialist colleague who uses the i700 daily – consistently say the i700 remains the best value point: lighter, faster, smoother, and a huge improvement on the i500. Many also comment that the i900 doesn’t offer a big enough clinical improvement to justify the price jump for most practices. Medit still has no mandatory ongoing licence fees, although offers optional paid Medit Link cloud storage tiers and some pay-per-use app modules, making it a flexible but evolving ecosystem. Scanner Wars: A Clinician’s Real-World Take on Digital Impressions in 2025 By Dr Jenny Liu, Principal Dentist, Happy Dentistry, Melbourne CBD Trios – A seamless fit for modern practice When I started my own clinic, I chose the Trios 3 (wired). It was fast, intuitive, accurate at margins, and much more stable than many other systems I had used before. I later upgraded to a newer-generation Trios 3 – essentially the same scanner in terms of software, colour rendering, and speed, but physically lighter and much more ergonomic, which is a big deal for clinicians with small hands like me. Clinically, Trios remains far better at capturing phonetic bites or disoccluded bites than the older Medit models, aligning arches more predictably even when the patient isn’t fully occluded. The Trios Core offers a lower-cost entry into the ecosystem, while the Trios 4, 5, 6, and 7 bring generation improvements in instant-heating tips, wireless ergonomics, refined algorithms, and AI alignment. However a major limitation is that none of the newer Trios models integrate with Invisalign. This remains the main reason I still use the Trios 3: it remains the last Trios unit with Invisalign integration. CEREC PrimeScan – Brilliant, powerful, and expanding PrimeScan is outstanding, especially if you run CEREC in-house. It’s ultra-fast, incredibly detailed, and strong on deep margins unless they are extremely deep. Colour reproduction is excellent – lifelike and highly accurate – and the AI stitching is exceptionally smooth. The downside is that it’s physically large, and with my size-small hands, the handpiece feels big. Patient comfort can also be impacted due to the size of the tip. PrimeScan integrates with DS Core, which includes advanced aligner simulation (SureSmile Simulator), collaboration tools, and lab integrations. While the scanner licence is included, DS Core cloud and DS Core Care support operate on subscriptions. Allied Star & Straumann A-Series – reliable, ergonomic, and evolving I recently used the Allied Star AS 200E wireless scanner and was genuinely impressed. It’s lightweight, well-balanced, comfortable, has a very stable wireless connection, and the heated anti-fog tip works beautifully. Colour rendering is accurate, and scanning margins is straightforward. I haven’t used the Straumann-branded A-Series version personally, but it is based on the same hardware, with Straumann adding deeper digital ecosystem integration. Both scanners are available in Australia – Allied Star sold independently (approximately AUD $23k, no licence fees), and Straumann packaged for integration into the Straumann system.
AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST19 PRODUCT REVIEW Shining 3D (Aoralscan Series) Shining 3D’s Aoralscan lineup is an increasingly popular value contender. Ergonomics are good, scanning speed is decent, and the software is intuitive and familiar if you’ve used Medit. Higherend models include shade detection and improved AI processing. The ecosystem isn’t as mature as Trios or PrimeScan, but Shining 3D remains an affordable and capable option. Panda Scanner – slim, lightweight, but ergonomically less stables The Panda scanner has become increasingly popular as an affordable entry-level option, and after using it clinically, I would say it offers good value for its price, even though it doesn’t compete with premium systems like Trios, PrimeScan, or the higher-end Medit range. Its recent software update has significantly improved raw scanning speed, with the Panda Smart version now scanning surprisingly quickly – often faster than other scanners in the same price category. Full-arch scans are captured efficiently with relatively smooth stitching, and accuracy is better than expected at this price bracket. It reportedly achieves around 7 μm precision, which is more than adequate for everyday restorative work, and many labs rate its data quality highly for crowns, bridges, and even implant scans. In my own hands, accuracy has generally been clinically acceptable, especially when soft tissue control is good. Ergonomically, Panda still has limitations. The handpiece is very thin, and because I’m used to slightly thicker scanners like Trios or the Allied Star Sensa, I find it a little less stable to hold over longer scans. The tip also has sharper edges, which can be uncomfortable for patients, particularly those with smaller mouths. The colour rendering is another drawback – shades appear more muted or slightly off compared with Trios, Allied Star, and Medit. It’s functional, but not as natural or useful for patient communication. Overall, Panda offers strong value, fast scanning for its price range, and good day-to-day accuracy, making it suitable as an entry-level or secondary scanner, though it still doesn’t match higher-tier systems in ergonomics, colour realism, or overall refinement. Carestream – A DEXIS white label with limitations I trialed a Carestream scanner at a recent course. It’s effectively a DEXIS white-label device. I found it clunky, slow, and much less intuitive. The wireless version felt laggy, and it required maintaining a fixed scanning distance – unlike Trios or Medit, which allow far more flexibility. While it has open-system compatibility and passable colour capture, it falls behind in speed, ergonomics, and workflow fluidity. Lab-supported scanner programs A growing number of labs now offer scanner-plus-lab bundled programs to help clinicians adopt digital workflows without heavy upfront investment. These models often provide access to scanners such as Panda, Allied Star, or Shining 3D at reduced initial cost, with expenses spread through lab usage or subscription-style arrangements. For many smaller or newer clinics, this significantly lowers the barrier to entering the digital space. This is actually how I first had the opportunity to trial both the Allied Star Sensa and the Panda scanners – through the MAG Dental lab program, which provides clinicians with access to scanners under a low-upfrontcost model as part of their digital workflow support. iTero – Fast, Accurate, Improved Ergonomics, and Strong Invisalign Integration (But With Ongoing Costs) My experience with the iTero scanner comes from the patient’s perspective – I had Invisalign around 2020, and the practice used an older-generation iTero model at the time. Even back then, I remember being impressed by how fast and accurate the scanner was. The only real drawback for me was the size of the wand tip: the older iTero models had quite a bulky scanning head, which made the process feel a little uncomfortable, especially when accessing posterior regions. Since then, iTero has released newergeneration scanners, including the most recent iTero Lumina, which has undergone a significant ergonomic redesign. Align reports that the Lumina wand is now approximately 50% smaller and 45% lighter than the previous iTero Element 5D, with a thinner wand tip specifically aimed at improving access and patient comfort. It also features a 3× larger field of view and increased capture distance, which helps with faster, smoother scanning – even in areas with limited space. Independent reviewers do note, however, that despite the smaller wand, the scanner head itself remains relatively wide, so while ergonomics have improved, clinicians may still need to be mindful of access when working around distal molars or patients with restricted opening. One of iTero’s biggest strengths remains its direct digital integration with Invisalign. For clinics with a heavy Invisalign focus, this seamless workflow is often the primary reason to invest in iTero over other opensystem scanners. That said, it’s important to also acknowledge the ongoing cost structure. Unlike some scanners that operate on a one-off purchase model, the iTero ecosystem involves: X annual subscription/licensing fees, X service/support contracts, and X cloud storage or workflow fees depending on the model. For many clinics, especially smaller or newer practices, these recurring costs can add up and are worth factoring into longterm budgeting. Overall, iTero remains a strong contender for Invisalign-focused practices, offering excellent accuracy, improved ergonomics in the newer models, and still one of the smoothest aligner-specific digital workflows available – but with a subscription model that needs to be considered. Final thoughts Every scanner has a place depending on the practice. The Trios 3 remains my personal favorite because it’s stable, comfortable, and one of the few that still integrates with Invisalign. PrimeScan is unbeatable if you run CEREC. Allied Star offers exceptional value. Medit continues to evolve rapidly. Shining 3D and Panda are strong budget contenders. Carestream works but feels outdated. Ultimately, the best scanner is one that fits your workflow, hand size, and patient needs – not just your budget. X

CATEGORY 22 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST EVENTS Reviewing entries for the inaugural Australian Dentistry Awards was a lesson in humility. Across the six categories I assessed – Charity/Community Practice, New Practice, Practice Design and Brand, Sustainability, Website of the Year, and Treatment of Nervous Patients – what struck me the most was how deeply embedded care was in every decision, from clinic layout to digital interfaces to community outreach. Excellence wasn’t announced with fanfare; it was evident in compost bins that included autoclave pouch paper, websites that anticipated patient anxiety before the first click, and solar panels that had quietly paid for themselves over a decade. Design as an act of care In Practice Design and Brand, one entry transformed a heritage building into a calm, modern clinic. Vaulted brick ceilings remained, but so did thoughtful details: garden views at eye level in treatment rooms, acoustics tuned to soften clinical noise, and a complete absence of antiseptic smells. Another new practice built its identity around clarity – consistent typography, restrained colour, and language that avoided jargon entirely. Their website, waiting room, and follow-up communications all spoke in the same calm, human voice, reinforcing trust at every touchpoint. Sustainability woven into daily operations The Sustainability submission from one practice detailed a 144-panel solar array that has generated 340 megawatt-hours over 10.5 years – saving 445,000 kilograms of CO2, equivalent to nearly 9 million “black balloons” of emissions. They’ve installed 17,000 litres of rainwater tanks (painted with Victoria’s endangered species like the helmeted honeyeater and Baw Baw frog), compost 14 waste streams – including autoclave pouch paper – and work with suppliers like SDI and Henry Schein to reduce packaging. Sustainability isn’t a side project. Staff “plog” (jog while picking up litter) around Akoonah Park. Patients bring in old toothbrushes for Terracycle recycling. The lead dentist has spoken at Men’s Sheds, the FDI World Dental Congress, and influenced nearby businesses to install solar panels. Their environmental policy isn’t tucked away – it’s part of their identity. Community as continuity In Charity/Community Practice, the strongest entries reflected long-term engagement. One described regular outreach to remote towns as core to their mission, not an annual event. Another detailed school partnerships and free care for people who’d avoided dentists for years. A handwritten note from a patient who hadn’t been able to chew solid food in over a decade summed it up: “I can eat an apple again.” That kind of impact doesn’t happen in a day. It’s built through consistency, presence, and respect. Anxiety met with structure and innovation For Treatment of Nervous Patients, one practice uses trauma-informed protocols that include cognitive behavioural therapy, Australian Dentistry Awards The Quiet work of excellence Judging the inaugural Australian Dentistry Awards revealed not a contest of accolades, but a profession grounded in purpose – where care, creativity, and commitment show up in ways both visible and unseen.
